Rockaways Ferry Service Extended Until At Least May
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The ride isn't over for residents of the Rockaways who have been relying on ferry service to get to Lower Manhattan.
Weekday ferry service, which had been slated to end Jan. 31, has been extended until May between the Queens neighborhood and Lower Manhattan, with an option to extend until August, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday.
The ferries also stop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
The service began in November 2012 as an emergency measure, after superstorm Sandy devastated other public transit options.
It has carried more than 200,000 passengers since then. Proponents say it offers a fast, reliable and affordable alternative for commuters.
