Lawsuit Filed Against Transfer Of Women, Including Transgender Women, From Rikers Island To State Prison

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A class action lawsuit has been filed against the transfer of women and transgender people from Rikers Island to a state prison.

The suit against the city and the state's Department of Corrections was filed on behalf of three women who were moved from Rikers to Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.

The plaintiffs say they have suffered assaults and sexual abuse.

At least 125 women and transgender detainees at Rikers Island have signed a petition opposing the transfers.
