2 Run Over By ATV At Riis Park Beach

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two people were run over by an all-terrain vehicle Tuesday on the beach at Jacob Riis Park in the Rockaways.

Witnesses said the ATV was on beach patrol at the time.

The driver swerved to avoid hitting a lifeguard stand, but instead ran over two men lying on beach towels.

One of the men suffered a head injury, the other suffered cuts to his arms and back.

"Immediately I thought, they are coming up a little bit too close to the beach towels," said witness Brooklyn Penson. "People should not be riding that close to beach towels with a four-wheeler."

Both men were able to walk to a waiting ambulance.
