Police Probe Long Island Crash That Critically Injured 2 Children

RIDGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County police were investigating late Tuesday after two children were critically injured in a crash in Ridge, Long Island.

Police said Lindsey Brown was driving a 2005 Suzuki south on Randall Road early Tuesday morning when she tried to turn left onto eastbound Route 25. Her vehicle was struck by a 2000 BMW driven by Mark Helupka and headed west on Route 25, police said.

Brown's two daughters, ages 5 and 6, were seated in the back of the car and were injured. They were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook in critical condition, police said.

Brown, 39, of Ridge was taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Helupka, 29, of Ridge was not injured, police said.

Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check and the investigation continued late Tuesday, police said. Anyone with information was asked to call the Suffolk County police Seventh Squad at (631) 852-8752.
