Rhode Island Man Arrested At NJ Hotel Slapped With Sex Assault, Human Trafficking Charges

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- A Rhode Island man found in a New Jersey hotel this week with a teenage girl has been charged with sexual assault and human trafficking.

Somerset County prosecutors say 29-year-old Paul Monteiro, of Providence, also faces kidnapping charges. He remains jailed on $400,000 bail, and it wasn't known Wednesday if he has retained an attorney.

Federal and local law enforcement agencies were searching for the 14-year-old girl when they found her and Monteiro at a Franklin Township hotel on Monday. Prosecutors say an investigation determined that Monteiro had brought the girl from Rhode Island to New Jersey.

Authorities are now reviewing Monteiro's travels from Rhode Island to New Jersey to determine whether he engaged in similar improper activity in other locations.
