Residents Across NYC Take Part In 'It's My Park Day'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Families and residents gathered across the five boroughs Saturday to beautify their local parks.

Lynn Kennedy has been organizing community improvement events at Astoria Heights Playground, activities that often include mural painting, caring for trees and cleaning up.

"We do this because it's our environment, we live here, this is our neighborhood," she told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern.

Volunteers also lent a hand at St. Mary's Park in the Bronx, Hope Ballfield in Brooklyn, Thomas Jefferson Park in Manhattan, and Graniteville Quarry Park in Staten Island.

Michelle Kennedy, with the group Partnerships for Parks, said every little bit helps.

"There's always something that can get cleaned up, it's a day-to-day process," she said. "So extra pairs of hands always help."

Kennedy added that volunteering makes people feel more connected to their local parks.
