Report: The Long Island Ducks Are Open To A-Rod Possibility

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is currently suspended for the entirety of the 2014 regular season and postseason. Newsday has reported that the Long Island Ducks are open to allowing A-Rod to play for them in the Atlantic League.

It appears that Rodriguez will exhaust every possible option to fight the suspension. The odds are stacked against A-Rod in federal court. Should his efforts fail, the Ducks are waiting with open arms to bring the A-Rod circus to Bethpage Ballpark.

Michael Pfaff, the Ducks president and general manager told Newsday via email:

"While some MLB suspensions have been honored by the Atlantic League in the past, if Alex Rodriguez were unable to participate in the Major Leagues this season, we would be open to exploring giving him a chance to play, stay sharp and compete against a high level of competition while helping the Ducks chase a third consecutive championship."

Should A-Rod be willing to play for the Ducks, the Yankees would first have to give A-Rod permission to play independent baseball.

It would be unlikely that A-Rod plays in either Japanese or Korean professional baseball in 2014. Both leagues have a history of honoring MLB suspensions.

If he's allowed to play for the Ducks, A-Rod would be following in the footsteps of Jose Canseco, Dontrelle Willis, Armando Benitez, Edgardo Alfonzo, Carlos Baerga, Richard Hidalgo and Sidney Ponson.
