Report: Special Teams Coach Kotwica Bolts Jets For Redskins
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- While it remains to be seen if Rex Ryan will get his contract extension, which may very well hinge on him changing some of staff to placate general manager John Idzik, the Jets now have to hire at least one new coach.
That's because special teams coach Ben Kotwica will be shacking up with the Redskins and new head coach Jay Gruden next season, the Daily News reported Wednesday.
Kotwica, whose contract with the Jets was expiring, replaced retired special teams coach Mike Westhoff last season. It was not immediately known if the Jets made an offer to retain Kotwica.
It has been widely speculated that in order to get his contract extension, Ryan may have to replace at least one top assistant, with the most obvious choice being defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman.
So far, Ryan has been resistant to these apparent demands, but the offseason has barely begun.
Owner Woody Johnson announced following the Jets' win in Miami to close the regular season that the team would retain Ryan for 2014, the final year of his contract. Ryan has failed to get the Jets into the playoffs over the last three seasons, but is coming off a surprising 8-8 campaign in which no one thought the rebuilding Jets would approach .500.
