Report: Sharp Increase In Personal Injury Claims Against NYC Department Of Correction
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- City Comptroller Scott Stringer has released a report showing a sharp increase in claims against New York City's Department of Correction.
"Personal injury correction facility claims against the Department of Correction rose 37 percent between this year and last year, and have risen 114 percent since 2009," Stringer told 1010 WINS.
Recent reports have cited numerous issues concerning the treatment of juvenile offenders at Rikers Island.
"The culture of violence detailed in recent reports on Rikers Island has made it clear that we are potentially facing a humanitarian crisis in our city's largest jail," Stringer said.
U.S. Attorney Prett Bharara recently issued a scathing report saying guards routinely violate constitutional rights of younger male inmates and subject them to "rampant use of unnecessary and excessive force," as well as excessive use of solitary confinement.
The City Council will vote Wednesday on a bill that would require the correction department to post online quarterly reports on inmates placed in solitary confinement, including their age, mental health and length of stay.
The bill is expected to pass.
