CBS2 Sources: NYPD Proposes New Training Materials For Police Academy Cadets
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - New training materials for NYPD Police Academy recruits would stress not to racially profile people and not stop people unnecessarily, sources told CBS2.
A 140-page recommendation was filed in federal court Monday, which includes new training for cadets about telling racist jokes and using offensive language, sources said.
Also among the lessons, cadets would be instructed not to imitate the speech patterns of others and that people stopped for questioning may resent it, WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported.
The new guidelines are pending approval before they will be integrated into training.
The New York Daily News reports the NYPD's federal overseer, Peter Zimroth, told a judge he'd like the new material presented to cadets graduating from the academy in June.
Eugene O'Donnell, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and former member of the NYPD, said while there are essential truths, "I hope it's done in an uplifting way."
"We have a tremendous number of people now telling the police how to do their job who themselves wouldn't do the job," O'Donnell said.
The new material was developed with input from the NYPD and City Hall, Murnane reported.
There is no word yet from the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association regarding whether the police union is aware of the material.
