Report: NYPD Detective Accused Of Filing False Paperwork For Recovered Gun Reward
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYPD detective was arrested and charged with forgery Wednesday, reportedly for allegedly submitting false paperwork to take a reward for a recovered gun.
Detective John Malloy, 46, was arrested around 8:15 a.m. in Lower Manhattan, police said. He was charged with two counts of forgery, and five counts of offering a false instrument for filing, petit larceny, and official misconduct.
A New York Daily News report said Malloy was assigned to the Gun Stoppers reward program, and filed false papers to try to get the reward for a recovered firearm.
Prosecutors said the illegal gun was recovered in Brooklyn in November 2012, but there was no tip that led to the arrest for which a reward could be claimed, the newspaper reported.
Prosecutors alleged that Malloy also forged the name of a fellow detective so that the other detective was investigated, and also forged the signature of a supervising sergeant and an inspector in another precinct, the newspaper reported.
Malloy allegedly claimed he falsified the paperwork because he was under pressure to finish a report, and drafted a news report because he could not read the handwriting of a detective who had taken the tip and because he was under stress from health problems, the newspaper reported.
Malloy pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Thursday and was released on a recognizance bond, the newspaper reported.
