Report: NYC Logs A Noise Complaint Every 4 Minutes On Average

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The sounds of New York City aren't music to everyone's ears.

The city made an attempt to modernize its noise code in 2007, but, according to The New Yorker, 311 operators logged more than 140,000 noise-related complaints in 2013 and 2014 -- or one gripe every four minutes.

While residents have complained about bulldozers, jackhammers and even vacuum cleaners, their biggest gripes are over loud music and parties.

The noisiest neighborhood is in Midtown. Other loud neighborhoods include East Village, West Village and Battery Park City.

The quietest sections are Co-op City in the Bronx and Starrett City in Brooklyn.

City Councilwoman Margaret Chin introduced legislation last year that would require the city's Department of Environmental Protection to start sampling noise levels throughout the city and get the decibel levels under control.
