Report: New York Cops Armed With Spray Paint Will Cover Up Graffiti

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Black, red, and white. Those are the colors of spray paint that the NYPD will reportedly be using to cover up graffiti in the city.

It's all part of the department's new graffiti fighting program, the New York Post reported.

Some New Yorkers have already questioned the policy.

"I think graffiti is a beautiful art form. I don't know that I want to see it sprayed on people's residences or their homes," Lawrence Greco told 1010 WINS reporter Derricke Dennis.

The Post said that officers have been instructed to spray over any graffiti tags, especially those found in areas like Bushwick, Brownsville, and Bed Stuy.

With shootings up 50 percent since May 2013, some say combating graffiti may not be the best use of department resources.

"I think they should be spending their time on other more worthwhile things," Ana Diaz said.
