Heyman: Mets To Give GM Sandy Alderson 3-Year Extension

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Sandy Alderson isn't going anywhere.

According to CBSSports.com/WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, the general manager is getting a three-year extension from the Mets that will run through 2017.

Alderson was hired following the 2010 season. He signed a four-year deal with an option for 2015, and has three losing seasons under his watch. New York (76-80) needs to go 5-1 in its last six games to avoid its sixth consecutive losing campaign.

The 66-year-old, working with a prohibitive payroll, has been commended for making some shrewd moves to improve the club's farm system. He's acquired high-ceiling players such as Zack Wheeler, Travis d'Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard, among others, in trades. The longtime executive has been criticized for failing in the free-agent market, however, signing such busts as Frank Francisco, Chris Young and Shaun Marcum. He's also been panned for inactivity, and Curtis Granderson -- his highest-priced signing with the Mets -- was a disappointment in the first year of a four-year, $60 million contract.

Heyman also reports that, as expected, manager Terry Collins will return in 2015.

Collins, who previously managed the Angels and Astros, was also hired following the 2010 campaign. He won 77 games in 2011 and 74 games each of the past two seasons. He'll likely eclipse that mark in 2014.

The Mets have a bright future, and could have one of the best pitching staffs in the National League next season with a combination of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Bartolo Colon, Dillon Gee and Jon Niese.

The bullpen features promising arms in Vic Black, Bobby Parnell, Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia.

Lucas Duda, d'Arnaud and Juan Lagares complement Daniel Murphy, Granderson and David Wright in the lineup, though there are glaring holes at shortstop and in left field.
