2 Police Officers Injured In Crash In Pine Beach, N.J.

PINE BEACH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two police officers were injured late Friday in a crash that shut down Route 9 in Pine Beach, New Jersey.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, two police cars, a minivan and a fourth vehicle were involved in a crash on Atlantic Avenue near Pine Street – on the boundary between Pine Beach and Berkeley Township, according to an Asbury Park Press report.

One of the officers – Jesse Urban, 23 -- was conducting a patrol operation at the time. The second, Robert King, was there as backup, police told 1010 WINS.

Another car drifted onto the shoulder as it passed by and hit the back of the backup squad car, which was in turn pushed into Urban's squad car, police said.

Officer Urban was outside the squad car and was struck, police said. He suffered broken ribs and severe head and face lacerations.

The driver of the car that drifted off the roadway, a 43-year-old man, and his passenger, a 37- or 38-year-old woman, were also injured, police said.

The officers and the other driver and passenger were all taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, police said. Urban's condition was reported as stable, while King was treated and released.

Police told 1010 WINS the driver that crashed into the scene and his passenger were coming home from a wedding, and an alcoholic beverage was detected at the scene.

Blood tests were conducted at the hospital and charges were pending late Saturday morning, police said.

Route 9 was shut down between Pine Beach and Toms River after the crash, the newspaper reported.
