Rep. Steve Israel Drives Bill To Create Safer Roads For Pedestrians, Byclists
BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Rep. Steve Israel has introduced legislation to make roadways safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the Long Island Democrat's bill would require bicycle and pedestrian lanes be factored in when building roadways.
Israel said the plan would not cost taxpayers a dime.
"The federal government provides existing grant funding and highway transportation funding to state and local governments," he said. "All we're saying is if you're going to get these grants, which are already paid for, apply them to comprehensive planning to make your streets more safe and more inclusive."
Israel pointed to Jericho Turnpike, where 20 people were killed while walking or riding a bicycle, as one of the problem spots.
Sandy Cutrone applauds Israel's legislation. She was riding a bicycle in Babylon, Long Island, when she had the right of way but was hit by a car, she told Hall. Cutrone broke her right scapula and has issues with her vision since the accident.
"I just remember being in the road," Cutrone said. "I don't actually really remember the specifics of the accident.
"I am very passionate about us getting safer bike lanes, and not just for bicyclists, OK, but for people who are disabled who are in wheelchairs and still have to get around like in the village where I was hit."
