Marketing Expert: Renting Top Consumer Trend For Millennials This Year

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Renting is a top consumer trend for millennials in 2016.

Marketing expert Audrey Guskey told CBS2's Hena Daniels that people are moving beyond renting just apartments and cars.

"We are a throw-away society and we found that people don't want a lot of stuff," Guskey, a marketing professor at Duquense University, said. "A lot of things you can rent that you would never dream of renting."

An app known as Airpnp lets people rent a bathroom in cities where they are hard to come by. There are usually dozens for rent along the Mardi Gras parade route in New Orleans.

People are even renting caskets. For $890, Lanigan Funeral Home in Pittsburgh lets loved ones rent a casket for those who want to be cremated, but also want a viewing.

"We reuse it a couple of times and then are able to use that casket and present it to someone at a deep, deep bargain rate," Patrick Lanigan, of Lanigan Funeral Home, said.

The renting trend is only expected to grow.
