Report: Red Light Camera Revenue Down 8 Percent In Nassau County
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Revenue from red light camera tickets is down 8 percent in Nassau County, according to a new report.
A series of red light cameras were installed at a number of intersections throughout the county five years ago, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
"Drivers can actually learn where these cameras are and I just want to make sure that the program is based on safety -- not just based on revenue," Nassau County legislator Carrie Solages said.
It also appears that the intersections are much safer, with a decreased number of accidents. According to the report, read ended crashes fell by 39 percent and head on crashes dropped by 79 percent. However, side impact crashes increased by one percent.
Solages said the county is currently not using the total amount of cameras permitted under the program.
"The're allotted to use 100 cameras, Solages said. "Currently the county is using anywhere between 77 to 86 cameras.
Solages believes the decrease in accidents should encourage the county to utilize all allotted cameras.
