Red Bank Man Ends Cross-Country Charity Run In Central Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – After more than three months of running, 24-year-old Garth Watson arrived in Central Park Wednesday, completing the last stretch of his run that raised money for cancer research.

The Red Bank, N.J., resident ran for the charity, Stand Up to Cancer, and started his trek in Oceanside, Calif., on May 11.

He told 1010 WINS that if not for the run, he would never have had the opportunity to see parts of the country that he did on the journey.

"It was pretty amazing the entire way just to get the see the country basically in super slow motion, going about 5 miles an hour. It was really neat," Watson said.

Watson said the most challenging part of his cross-country run was the mental aspect, especially early on.

"Like in Arizona, when it's completely desolate and just running through the desert completely by myself and still had so many more miles to go. My body was still getting adjusted to the higher mileage, I was doing 30 miles a day at the time," he said.

Watson has raised more than $14,000 during his run.
