Rangers Pluck Veteran Center Matthew Lombardi Out Of The Swiss League

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Rangers have signed center center Matthew Lombardi, the team announced on Wednesday.

According to Andrew Gross of The Record, the deal is for $1.6 million over two years.

Lombardi, 32, led the Swiss League in scoring last season, tallying 20 goals and 30 assists in just 46 games.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward had previously registered 101 goals and 262 points in parts of nine NHL seasons, while playing for the Calgary Flames, Phoenix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks. Lombardi scored a career-high 20 goals with Calgary in 2006-07, and posted a career-best 54 points with Phoenix in 2009-10.

Lombardi is known for his penalty-killing prowess, something that should come in handy since the Rangers lost defensive stalwarts Benoit Pouliot and Brian Boyle to free agency.
