Voters Strike Down Contentious Ward System In Ramapo

RAMAPO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Nearly a year later, the results of a vote on whether Ramapo should set up a controversial ward system in the town have been announced.

As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, voters said no to changing the way they elect the town board. Residents will stick with four at large members instead of six from separate districts.

Last year's referendum was in response to a perception by some that the Ultra Orthodox Jewish block vote gives the community disproportionate political influence, Adams reported.

The vote count was held up amid allegations of fraud and impropriety, according to Assemblyman Ken Zobrowski.

"I believe the vote should be invalidated. I saw the procedures that were in place that day and I do not think it was a fair and transparent election," said Zobrowski.

There was some confusion at the polls over affidavit ballots for residents not registered to vote.

Ramapo's supervisor told The Journal News the vote validates the Democratic process.

Legal challenges are expected.
