Questions Arise About Location Of Hackensack University Medical Center's Ebola Treatment Center
HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Questions have arisen about a New Jersey hospital's setup to treat Ebola patients.
The complex of connected trailers set up by Hackensack University Medical Center currently sits in a private lot next to a McDonald's and a train station, a few blocks from the main campus, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.
"On Newman Street, for the mere fact that the CDC will be reviewing its capability to act as an Ebola center," City Manager David Troast said of the temporary location.
Troast said the CDC has not gotten back to say what they thought after checking it on Saturday. But as for where the trailer complex sits now, "The location is not decided yet as to where that facility would be set up," Troast said.
The city manager said there are flooding, zoning and residential concerns about keeping it where it is.
"Trash removal, because that's part of the Ebola question is how to you dispose of the trash. It's also a power source, and Newman Street happens to be in a flood zone," Troast said.
Kaci Hickox, who volunteered in Sierra Leone with Doctors Without Borders, was the first person forced into New Jersey's mandatory quarantine for people arriving at Newark Liberty Airport from the three West African countries hit hardest by the disease.
She spent the weekend in a tent at University Hospital in Newark before traveling to the home she shares with her boyfriend in Fort Kent, Maine.
"I'm not willing to stand here and let my civil rights be violated when it's not science-based," she told reporters Wednesday evening.
On the other side of the state line, New York state and New York City announced Thursday they will create a program to offer financial incentives and employment protections to encourage medical workers to go to West Africa to fight Ebola.
