Queens Mother Charged In Death Of Infant Son Arraigned At Hospital

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Queens woman charged in the death of her 11-month-old son faced a judge on Thursday.

Nicole Kelly, 22, was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge from the hospital via a video hook up, the Queens County District Attorney's Office said. She was ordered held without bail and her next court date was set for July 21.

Prosecutors said Tuesday Kelly killed her infant son, Kiam Felix Jr., inside their Elmhurst home on Sunday.

Authorities said she covered the baby's face and body by tucking him in a bed sheet and then watched the little boy as he struggled to breath.

She then left him alone as she showered for about 30 minutes, prosecutors said. When she returned, Kelly found the baby blue and unresponsive, authorities said.

He was eventually taken to the hospital several hours later, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Kelly allegedly told investigators she had reached her "breaking point" and said "I didn't want him anymore."

"This is a truly disturbing case of a mother accused of intentionally killing her helpless 11-month-old infant son," District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement.

If convicted, Kelly faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
