Revelers Brave Frigid Temps To Celebrate Lunar New Year In Flushing, Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Although many outdoor events were canceled this weekend due to extreme cold, that didn't stop residents in Queens from celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year.

With the actual temperatures falling as low as 4 degrees below, the weather service said the city could see wind chills between 18 and 24 degrees below on Saturday.

But as WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the folks at the Lunar New Year parade in Flushing somehow braved the cold and still had a good time.

Pastor Christian Kim, of the New York Mosiac Church, marched in the parade for two hours. He told Hall that he was wearing two pairs of leggings and something to cover some of his face.

One paradegoer said the key is to bundle up big time.

"I have five layers on the top and the bottom," he said.

Revelers are welcoming the Year of the Monkey. Lunar New Year celebrations in New York City kicked off last weekend with a massive fireworks display over the Hudson River.
