2 Small Children Hit By Flying Glass When Bullets Shatter Car Windows In Queens
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bullets shattered car windows and flew into a vehicle with two children inside in the Rockaways Friday.
As CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported, a grandmother was just driving down the street on Beach Channel Drive at 54th Street in the Edgemere section of Queens around 2 p.m., with a 1-year-old ad a 4-month-old in her back seat suddenly coming under fire.
The rear window on the driver's side was shattered by one of the flying bullets right where the children were seated.
A bullet hole was visible in the gray car's door frame. The slug was lodged in the front seat.
Both children were hit by flying glass, but amazingly were not seriously hurt.
The driver, Miriam Tomas, said she was just turning at the stoplight when somebody opened fire out of nowhere.
"I was at the red light waiting, and we hear some gunshots, and by the time I was ready to pull out to the green light, the bullet caught the back of the glass. There's two babies in the back of the seat… so right now the babies are in the hospital, but they didn't get hurt, but they still took the babies for checkup," Tomas said.
At least two other vehicles were hit by the flying bullets. Late Friday, police were investigating whether the gunshots were fired from the roof of a nearby building.
The 1-year-old in the car was Tomas' granddaughter, and the 4-month-old was the little girl's cousin and was strapped in next to her, 1010 WINS reported. They were on the way to Tomas' daughter's house, 1010 WINS reported.
The infants covered in broken glass were taken to an area hospital to be checked out as a precaution.
