Queens Assemblyman Wants Funding Diverted To Upgrade 'Disgusting' Aqueduct Racetrack

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A Queens lawmaker has introduced a measure that would require the New York Racing Association to pony up more funding for Aqueduct Racetrack.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, New York State Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is not happy with the current conditions at the racetrack.

"Aqueduct is downright disgusting," said Goldfeder. "The building is falling apart, there's facade issues. As has been reported multiple times, there's been a tremendous amount of security issues."

On Monday, Goldfeder announced legislation to require NYRA to use its share of casino money earmarked for capital projects only at Aqueduct.

"Most of that money gets sent to Saratoga and other racetracks while Aqueduct continues to deteriorate," Goldfeder told Smith. "I think the money's in place. There's 4 percent that goes currently to NYRA Capital, which is mostly spent in Saratoga."

Goldfeder said his proposal could mean more than $30 million a year reinvested at Aqueduct.

Representatives for NYRA were not available for comment.
