Queens After School Coach Fired Following Student Brawl Video

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An after school coach in Queens was fired after a video surfaced of two 12-year-old boys wailing on each other as he seemingly stood by and did nothing to break it up.

Toward the end of the video, the coach ushers one of the middle school boys off camera.

"It's very unacceptable, you're a grown man, you're supposed to be a role model for these kids," Kevin Jones, a father of one of the boys involved, told CBS2'S Alice Gainer.

Jones said he learned of the incident when his son came home from the after-school program at Brian Piccolo Middle School in Far Rockaway, Queens and began complaining of pain. He says the confrontation began with a dispute over school money.

"I had to take him to St. John's Hospital located in Far Rockaway as well and the doctor says he has a little muscle problem in his head," Jones said.

The father said he then saw the video posted to Facebook that night by another boy and was furious.

The coach, Marcus Cruz, has since been fired.

"Cruz was not a DOE employee, and he was swiftly removed from his position at an after-school program at the school. There is zero tolerance for employees, vendors, or volunteers who do not prioritize the safety of our students, and the incident has been referred to SCI for investigation," the Department of Education said in a statement.

Once the special commissioner of investigation looks into it, Jones and his lawyer will determine if a lawsuit is necessary.

"Was this coach vetted? What other circumstances occurred prior to this with regard to this particular coach? All those things have to be investigated," Sanford Rubenstein, Jones' lawyer, told CBS2.

The after school program is run by Sports & Arts in School Foundation, which the DOE subcontracts. SASF says they're conducting an investigation.

As for Jones and his son, he says he had him transferred to another school after the kids involved allegedly starting threatening him.
