Prosecutors: Pine Bush Central S.D. Could Have Done More To Combat Anti-Semitic Harassment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Education officials at one Hudson Valley school district are in hot water after federal prosecutors say the district didn't fully respond to claims of anti-Semitic harassment at its schools.

The Pine Bush Central School District has been under investigation by state police and the state Division of Human Rights following a lawsuit filed by three local families who claim the school district tolerates the harassment of Jewish students.

Government lawyers said in court papers that they have enough evidence to suggest officials in the district ignored signs that greater action was needed beyond punishing individual students, The New York Times reported Saturday.

The school district has denied it condoned anti-Semitism and asked a judge presiding over the lawsuit to rule in its favor.

The district has schools in Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties.
