Prosecutors: NJ Man Carried Out 'Simple Scheme' To Steal $6 Million From Employer

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A northern New Jersey man has been arrested on charges he ripped off millions of dollars from his employer.

As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, Albert Thomson, 48, of Berkeley Heights, is accused of stealing $6 million from Elizabeth-based trucking company New England Motor Freight.

"He was in charge of filing registrations for the vehicles in this company and as a result, he just filed paperwork for false registrations and took the cashiers check," Union County Acting Prosecutor Grace Park told Putney. "Checks that were supposed to cover the amount for those registration costs and pocketed them. So it's a relatively simple scheme but it turned out to be a fraud of a large amount of money."

Thomson allegedly cashed the checks and used some of the money to pay off credit card bills.

"Purchasing luxury cars, renting a residence at the Jersey Shore," said Park.

Prosecutors said the scheme went on for nine years. Park said the company spotted some financial irregularities and asked police to investigate.

Thomson has been charged with theft by deception. He is being held on $250,000 bail.
