Prosecutors Calling Death Of 8-Year-Old Newark Boy 'Suspicious'

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Essex County prosecutors are calling the death of an 8-year-old boy in Newark "suspicious."

Newark police responded Sunday to a call from the Bradley Court Houses on North Munn Avenue about a child who was not breathing.

Neighbor Dorothy Howard said she often heard fighting coming from the apartment and that the family had struggled to pay rent or even buy food, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

"Why wasn't nothing implemented to help put some structure in this kid's life? Now we have another 8-year-old that's breathless, that's dead, that's laying in the morgue with a toe tag," Howard said.

Police referred the case to the prosecutor's office.

A crime scene unit was spotted at the location taking photographs.
