Prosecutors: Mom Said Devil Made Her Smother 20-Month-Old Son

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New York City mother accused of killing her 20-month-old son told an emergency responder the devil made her "put him to sleep," according to prosecutors.

Latisha Fisher, 35, was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge Wednesday via video hook-up from a correctional hospital. She did not enter a plea during her court appearance.

Last Week, Fisher and her son, Gavriel Ortiz-Fisher, were found in the bathroom at 5 Boro Burger on Sixth Avenue near 36th Street at about 2:45 p.m.

Police said a worker at the restaurant became concerned after noticing that the woman and child were in the bathroom for an unusual amount of time. The worker entered the bathroom, saw the boy unconscious on the woman's lap and called 911.

When asked what she was doing, the woman allegedly said, "I put my hand over his mouth to put him to sleep," WCBS 880's Marla Diamond previously reported.

According to court papers, Fisher demonstrated to a responding emergency medical worker how she put the child to sleep by cupping her hands in "a smothering gesture."
