Program Keeping Brooklyn Neighborhood Clean, Putting Unemployed To Work

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The busy Borough Park shopping district is looking cleaner thanks to Project Sweep.

State Sen. Simcha Felder helped to obtain $100,000 in state funds to expand the program, which employs out-of-work and disabled people, into the Brooklyn neighborhood for at least a year, WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola reports.

"We're going to make sure that the neighborhoods are clean, and it gives the opportunity for people to earn money and feel productive at the same time," said Felder, D-Brooklyn.

Lucindia Marshall, 46, of Brownsville, Brooklyn, is helping to clean Borough Park after losing her job doing office work.

"Just keeping the neighborhood clean, just picking up the trash," she said. "Wherever you see trash, you pick it up."

Alex Landau, manager of Goldberg's Market, said the program is making a "major difference" in the neighborhood.
