Princeton Officials Evaluating New Avalon Bay Project Following Edgewater Fire

PRINCETON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Mercer County and Princeton officials are looking to slow down the approval process for Avalon Bay's big housing project in downtown Princeton.

As 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported, officials are fearful after watching the Avalon at Edgewater apartments burn down again.

Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland joined Princeton officials Tuesday to make several requests to the state.

"We're going to ask the DCA, the Department of Community Affairs, to take a look at the fire codes. For a building to burn like that, we have an obligation to take a look at the fire codes," McPartland said. "I mean, buildings have progressed in the way construct buildings, but perhaps the codes and the sprinkler systems need to be looked at."

McPartland called it a miracle that many lives weren't lost in the Edgewater fire as they work to ensure that it never happens again.
