New York's 'Pride Island' Reopened After Wild Weather Shuts Down Music Concert

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- "Pride Island" has been reopened after a sudden evacuation due to severe weather that moved across the New York City area Saturday afternoon.

The NYPD's Midtown North precinct tweeted out the announcement just after 5 p.m., saying that the World Pride venue at Pier 97 near 59th Street and the West Side Highway was being cleared out due to the risk of lightning strikes to spectators.

The area was been jammed packed all afternoon Saturday with live music, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising in New York City. CBS2's Reena Roy spoke to many fans who had traveled across the country to enjoy the World Pride event.

"It does suck because we traveled all the way from Chicago and Portland and now we're bring told to go home and it's like I did not travel 700 miles to be told to go back," Misael Sanders-Estrada said while waiting for the storm to clear.

Pride Island also continues on Sunday with even more performers including Madonna. She'll be one of the big acts as millions gather for the annual pride march through Manhattan's west side.
