Man found dead after SUV goes into water in Port Washington

Car crashes into Long Island Sound in Port Washington

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. - Police say a man was found dead after an SUV went into the water in Port Washington on Wednesday.

It happened just after 3 p.m.

The Nassau County Police Department says a witness saw a white object floating in the water at Hempstead Harbor and called police.

The object turned out to be an SUV. There was no immediate word on how the vehicle went into the water, but the location is near a boat ramp. 

Port Washington Fire Department crews later pulled the body of a 54-year-old man from the water. He was pronounced dead just before 4 p.m.

His identity has not yet been released, and the cause of death has not been determined.

The investigation is ongoing.
