Port Jefferson Woman Accused Of Leaving Boy, 6, Home Alone

PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island woman is accused of leaving her 6-year-old son home alone overnight and for part of the day Friday.

According to Suffolk County police, the little boy had stopped a Port Jefferson Village Constable at approximately 12:25 p.m. Friday and told him he was home alone.

Officers were called to the Windward Drive home and determined that the boy had been left home alone since 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Following an investigation, police arrested the boy's mother, Melissa Weiner, 31. She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

The boy, who was not injured, was released to a family member and Child Protective Services were notified.

Weiner was being held at the 4th Precinct in Hauppauge, and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
