Pop-Up Storms Bring Lightning, Hail To Tri-State Area
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Pop-up storms wreaked havoc in parts of the Tri-State Area Wednesday.
The storms brought pea-sized hail in Lakewood, New Jersey, and there were lightning strikes in New Jersey and Manhattan.
CBS2's cameras caught a lightning strike hitting the top of One World Trade Center.
Instagram users also captured the lightning blast.
CBS2's Lonnie Quinn reported some storm systems were still hovering over the East End of Long Island as of 9 p.m., and more popup storms were expected as late as between 11 p.m. and midnight.
One popup storm system was heading northeast from Allentown, Pennsylvania as of 9 p.m., and was expected to arrive in New York City by 11:30 p.m.
In the greater weather picture, a rotating system of storms was hovering late Wednesday over the northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, causing instability even as far to the southeast as the Tri-State Area.
For St. Patrick's Day on Thursday, conditions are expected to be mostly cloudy with a high of 62 degrees and southwest winds of 5 to 20 mph. Some showers may appear during the latter half of the parade, Quinn reported.
