Some New York Catholic Schools To Close Friday For Pope's Visit

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Some Roman Catholic schools will close Friday during Pope Francis' visit to New York.

A spokeswoman says the New York Archdiocese's 31 Manhattan elementary schools will close Friday. Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem will be on Francis' itinerary, but it will not be open for a regular school day.

Catholic high schools in Manhattan will decide on a school-by-school basis whether to close. Catholic schools in the Bronx, Staten Island and the northern suburbs will remain open.

Some Westchester schools will close at noon Friday. That's so people who have tickets to see the pope's motorcade in Central Park will have time to get there.

The pope arrives in New York on Thursday and will attend a prayer service at Saint Patrick's Cathedral.

On Friday, he'll head to the UN, then to the World Center site before going to Our Lady Queen of Angels School. He will then travel the west side of Central Park for a papal motorcade and down to Madison Square Garden for an evening mass.

Street closures, parking bans and even possible mass transit service shutdowns are expected around these venues.
