Poll: Support For Medical Marijuana Down Slightly In New York
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A poll shows support for medical marijuana is slightly down from February, but New Yorkers still overwhelmingly support the drug for medical use.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Friday finds that 83 percent of New Yorkers support medical marijuana, down from 88 percent in February. Fifteen percent of voters are opposed.
The poll also shows that 51 percent of voters support allowing adults to legally have small amounts of marijuana for personal use, while 44 percent don't support it.
"Politically, Republicans are against it 69 to 28, Democrats for it 62 to 12," poll director Maurice Carroll told WCBS 880's Rich Lamb.
The poll also found men and people under 34 favor the legalization of recreational marijuana; women and people over 55 oppose it, Lamb reported.
When asked if they support having a medical marijuana dispensary in their town or city, 62 percent of voters supported the idea, while 34 percent were opposed.
The telephone poll of 1,129 New York voters was conducted May 14-19 and has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.
