Poll: Foley Leading Pack Among Conn. GOP Gubernatorial Hopefuls; Deadlocked With Malloy

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - The latest Quinnipiac University poll shows Connecticut Republican gubernatorial hopeful Tom Foley leading the pack among Gov. Dannel Malloy's challengers.

As WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, the poll shows Foley in an excellent position as he and other GOP candidates head to the convention next week.

"It's clear that he is the frontrunner and he has a huge lead in a Republican primary. He would get 39 percent of the vote; no other Republican breaks out of single digits," Quinnipiac University poll director Doug Schwartz said.

Schwartz said although Foley has so far stayed in the background, voters remember him from the governor's race four years ago. Foley has thus far declined invitations to debate other GOP hopefuls.

The poll shows Foley and the incumbent Malloy are deadlocked at 43 percent.

"As you know, it was a Foley/Malloy matchup in 2010, came down to just 6,000 votes separating them," he told Schneidau.

Schwartz noted that the poll shows Republican hopefuls John McKinney and Mark Boughton both are within striking distance of Foley.
