Police: Well-Dressed Man Arrested For Stealing $90K From White Plains Gas Station

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A well-dressed man wanted for allegedly stealing $90,000 in cash from a White Plains gas station has been arrested, police said Wednesday.

Robert Berry, 54, of Mount Vernon, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with second-degree grand larceny, police said.

The incident happened last Wednesday at the USA Service Pro Auto Shop on Mamaroneck Avenue.

Around 9:15 a.m., police said a man wearing an Ascot hat, a shirt and tie, dark slacks and a coat was seen on surveillance video waiting around the gas station.

The man then goes into an office and takes large stacks of cash from an unlocked safe, stuffing them in his shirt, police said.

The store's owner, Gene Mjeshtri, said he never saw the suspect until he watched the store's security video.

"I couldn't believe my eyes," he said. "To me, it is an inside job somehow. He had knowledge for everything."

The missing cash amounts to the cost of six loads of gas plus payroll and car parts, Mjeshtri said. Only a fraction of it was insured.

Police said Berry has an extensive criminal history, including robbery and burglary. They said several tips and other leads helped investigators identify Berry as a suspect. A search warrant was also conducted of Berry's home, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
