Police: Thieves Crash Dump Truck Into Long Island Macy's, Steal ATM Machine

LAKE GROVE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police said thieves used a dump truck to crash into a Macy's on Long Island early Tuesday, before making off with an ATM.

As CBS2's Emily Smith reported, the aftermath of the mayhem was captured on video. A taxi driver called 911 saying he had witnessed thieves smash through the glass at the Macy's in the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove.

The driver asked CBS2 not to reveal his identity, but he described what happened.

"I see a dump truck backed up to the doors with broken glass out, attaching a chain around an ATM machine," he said. "The truck was yanking it out."

The taxi driver said the men then somehow loaded the ATM machine into the back of the vehicle from inside the vestibule, and sped off.

"They were driving randomly. They went up Richards Road towards 347," he said. "I guess they were trying to lose me."

The taxi driver did not stop following the perpetrators until he lost sight of them -- minutes before officers arrived.

Police found the truck first, with the ATM in the back. It had been stolen from Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, police said.

Police launched a massive search for the suspects. The two-hour search included police dogs and a helicopter, and finally ended around 4 a.m. with one man in custody.

The dump truck with the ATM was impounded at the crime scene, police said.

Police were still looking for a second suspect as of Tuesday afternoon.
