Police: Teen Assault Knocks Man Out, Fractures Woman's Eye Socket

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police say an innocent man and woman were attacked on a Bronx sidewalk, the man left unconscious until someone called 911.

CBS 2's Clark Fouraker talked to people on the block who said they were surprised by the violence.

Cops say when a 33-year-old man was knocked out on White Plains Road in the Soundview section of the Bronx, he and another victim, a 67-year-old female, were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"I mean this area is pretty good. That's why when I saw all you guys here I was like, wow what's going on here?" Soundview resident Alan Samantha said.

Police said the two suspects -- teen boys believed to be between the ages of 16 and 19 -- thought the man was making fun of them when they attacked him at around 1 a.m. on Sunday.

"I see too many young kids being too aggressive with older, younger ... there's a lot of violence going on," resident Carmen Joaquin said. "So it's kind of scary out there that our kids are growing up to be too aggressive."

Surveillance video shows what happened to the 33-year-old who was rendered unconscious on the sidewalk. It does not show what happens to the 67-year-old woman who was also punched, CBS2's Fouraker reported.

Police believe the woman was an innocent bystander who got caught up in the assault. Her eye socket was fractured from a punch to the face.

Residents said they're surprised an allegedly unprovoked attack happened on their block.

"Ya, surprised me, ya," Kasim Hussein said. "I've been here about 10 years. Ten years and this is the first time somebody's punched in the face."

Still, residents say they're being cautious about walking too late at night. On the block in question, only one corner bodega is open. All the other businesses are closed.

"Look around you when you walk," Soundview resident Brenda Ramirez said.

"There's really no need for violence. You can look for someone and talk to them. Vent in a different way. You don't have to resort to an innocent bystander, punching them," Joaquin added.

The NYPD is asking for the community's help finding the two suspects accused in the assault and are hoping to keep the sidewalks safe at all hours of the day.

Both victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay.
