Police: Murder Suspect Intentionally Struck Man With Van In Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Manhattan man has been charged with murder after he allegedly struck and killed a man with a minivan in the Bronx early Sunday morning.
Jonathan Mejia, 25, of Washington Heights, has been charged with murder, manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while ability-impaired, police said.
Police said the victim, Edward Jenkins, 43, of the Bronx, had fired a gun at Mejia's vehicle just before the deadly confrontation, which happened at about 3:30 a.m. at University Avenue and West 176 Street in Morris Heights.
A romantic rivalry might have triggered the violence, police said. Jenkins saw his former girlfriend in the minivan with another man and began firing a gun, police said.
Mejia, driving a Honda Odyssey minivan, took off but later encountered the gunman and ran him down, authorities said.
The gunman was pronounced dead at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.
