Police: Suspected Carjacker Drove Off, Crashed After Being Shot By N.J. State Trooper

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A suspected carjacker was captured by police Monday, after he was shot by a New Jersey state trooper but escaped.

Around 10:30 a.m., New Jersey state troopers spotted a minivan at South 20th Street and 18th Avenue in Newark, which they said had been carjacked at gunpoint in the early morning, state police told CBS2.

A trooper approached the vehicle, and the driver jumped the curb and allegedly tried to run the trooper down, police said.

The trooper fired several shots at Steve Montgomery, 21, who was hit, police said.

But he drove off and crashed into a parked car at Springfield Avenue and Grove Street in Irvington, New Jersey, state police said.

The suspect was taken to University Hospital in Newark with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.

The van was being examined for possible connections to other robberies in the area Monday morning, police said.
