Police Still Searching For Suspect Who Struck, Killed LI Man With Stolen Car

NORTH BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police continue to search for the person who struck and killed a Long Island man with his own car Friday morning.

It happened when Dionel Ramirez, 69, of North Amityville stopped at a 7-Eleven on Pine Aire Drive in North Bay Shore around 5:45 a.m.

He left his car running in the parking lot with the door open and went into the store to pick up food to bring to a local soup kitchen, police said.

"A person entered his car and attempted to steal it. Mr. Ramirez got in front of the car. The person then drove over him," Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer told WCBS 880's Monica Miller.

Ramirez was taken to Southside Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Beyrer said they're looking for anyone who saw what happened, Miller reported.

Ramirez's daughter told CBS2 her father's life philosophy was to always be thankful.

"Be grateful and give hope," Michelle Ramirez said.

She said the U.S. Army veteran never forgot his humble beginnings in Guatemala.

"My dad was a great man. He would help out with the homeless people, just do whatever it takes to help anybody out basically," she added.

The car was later found by police, but the suspect remains on the loose.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to call 1-800-220-TIPS.
