NYPD Officer Jumps Into Hudson River To Save Suicidal Man

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two NYPD officers helped save a man who had jumped into the water off a marina in downtown Manhattan early Tuesday morning in an apparent suicide attempt, police say.

Officer Rajub Bhowmik jumped into the water to rescue a 49-year-old man after spotting him struggling off the South Cove Marina at around 1:20 a.m., police said.

Officer Ismael Mercedes alerted the NYPD Harbor Unit, which came to the aid of the officers, police said.

The man was safely removed from the water and taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.

Police say the man had jumped into the water as part of a suicide attempt.

Bhowmik was taken to NYU Dowtown Hospital for evaluation.
