Police: Robbery May Have Motivated Slaying Of Man, 83, In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Monday were investigating the stabbing death of an 83-year-old man in Newark this past weekend.

Leonard Pearson was found by his family members around 10 p.m. Saturday, in an apartment in the seniors' affordable housing building at 2 Nevada St. in Newark.

Pearson was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. It appeared that he had been stabbed to death in his apartment, police said.

Newark police said Monday night that the investigation into Pearson's slaying was ongoing. Police believe the motive may have been robbery.

In a separate and unrelated incident in Newark this past weekend, another man – Yasin Bell, 29, of Carteret and Newark – was shot and killed at 525 Elizabeth Ave., police said. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark. Further details were not available Monday night.
