Police: Rifle, Bulletproof Vest Stolen From Connecticut Cruiser

MILFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police said a semi-automatic rifle and a bulletproof vest have been stolen from a department cruiser.

At first it seemed like a rash of car break-ins along West Rutland Road in Milford. Then investigators saw the state police cruiser parked outside the trooper's home.

Milford Police Spokesman Michael Devito said the windows of the cruiser were smashed and once the thieves gained entry, they were able to unlock the trunk where a high-powered rifle was stolen.

"They went through many cars. There was paperwork and information strewn about the car and obviously it appeared there wasn't much value that interested them, so they move onto the next car," Devito told WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau.

Devito said the stolen AR-15 rifle is a dangerous weapon, especially in the wrong hands.

Several other items were taken from the vehicle's back seat. State police are cooperating with local police, who are investigating.
