Police Raid Bronx Apartment After Cyanide Incident
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities raided a Bronx apartment Wednesday, five days after police said a resident went to a police station with cyanide.
The investigation began last Friday when police said a 22-year-old man walked into the 49th precinct station with a small vile of toxic material. It later tested positive for cyanide.
The man, identified as Jonathan Norling, was taken to Bellevue Hospital Centeral for a psychiatric evaluation. While he was being held, he allegedly said there could be more chemicals inside his apartment, CBS 2's John Slattery reported.
Police raided the apartment, located on Cruger Avenue near Pelham Parkway, Wednesday night and recovered what they said was 1 ounce of the toxin Abrin, which was hidden inside a flashlight, inside a safe.
Police said a U-haul Norling rented contained a 9mm gun, an AR-15 assault weapon, and ammo clips.
Neighbors said Norling lived in the apartment with his wife and 1-year-old daughter, Slattery reported.
"I'm wondering how he obtained the chemicals. Glad it's under control and caught early on," neighbor Raymond Ladeveze said.
The NYPD says there is no indication Norling had terrorist intentions.
He is being charged with criminal possession of the chemicals and weapons charges for the two guns, Slattery reported.
Norling's wife and daughter were taken to a hospital as a precaution for possible chemical exposure.
Cyanide is used in the mining industry and is regulated by the government.
